Belly Dance comes from the Middle East. It was born to tie communities together and is an expression of joy danced by both men and women of all ages. It is a dance that is fun, and is amazing excersize for the body, mind and spirit. It will increase your focus and sense of well being due to the engagement of all the chakra centers in the spine and brain, both due to the musical complexity, and movement and technique. Using the breath in this dance is meditative.

To become proffesional level is very difficult as it involves tremendous technique as does Flamenco or Ballet. Musical interpretation is of songs in Arabic, so to dance well it helps to understand Arabic language at the minimum. Interesting to not that Middle Eastern music that is witten on a 'natural scale' whereas Western or European is written on a tempered scale. That is what we hear in the majority of 'minor' as opposed to 'major' chords or pitch. It isn't easy, but, as my good friend, Khalil Ramul told me, "When it is done right, it is Poetry"!
If you want a challenge, artistically and fitness wise, and to have a groupe of Bellydance sisters, Shahrazad Dance Co. is for you!
